I'm looking for a free application that will let me record the screen on my MacBook. I want it to record decent length videos from the screen, so I'm not interested in the ones that only record one minute or similar limits.

What do you guys recommend? Are there any free ones that also provide audio support?

If you have Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard), use QuickTime X.

If not, use MRoogle to find some threads about this.

Oh wow. I didn't know Quicktime did that. Thanks!

Will it record audio as well, or will I need to overdub?

I just did a test and it will not record audio, but QT can also record audio via the microphone. Maybe something like Audio Hijack might help you. Have you found anything via MRoogle?

I was actually just messing around with Quicktime, and saw that it will record audio with screen recordings. You just need to use the drop down arrow on the screen record option, and then select the input. :D

I was completely unaware that Quicktime did recordings. I thought it basically just played videos.

I'll be putting it through its paces the next few days. :)

Thanks!

You can use the free app Soundflower.

Then, go in the preferences and choose Soundflower as the entry device and output device.

You can then record the computer audio with Quicktime X

Can you hear sound when recording with soundflower? No. I've tried both versions of soundflower and neither work. They screw up the sound settings.

Of course you cannot hear sound

It routes it from Core Audio to the recording app. If you want to hear sound trough the speakers as well then you need to create an aggregate device. Apple has a guide in its support database.
