free AVI to MP4 converter?

I asked this in the Digital Video forum but there's a lot more traffic here.

I need to convert a few AVI files in the 50MB to 200MB range. I haven't done this type of file conversion in probably a decade. What are the best free apps for this right now? Thanks very much.

A decade ago you probably used Handbrake. It’s still my choice for video conversations. Go with it.
