(free) avi to mpeg converter?

Does anyone know a program I can download that will convert avi to mpeg? Everything I've found so far is usually only a free trial. I've tried MPEG streamclip, but it doesn't recognize avi and the conversion is screwed up. A little help, anyone? Any suggestion welcome.

MPEG Streamclip works for me - I use it to covert avis to all kinds of formats. Make sure you have Perian installed first of course.
 
Thanks so much for all the help. I downloaded Perian and my MPEG streamclip works perfectly now. I knew I was just missing one thing, lol :)

Thanks bud, I'm going ot try that one out as well. iSquint didn't work too well for me, it was super slow (ahem, G4) and the interface/options really bugged me.

I'll give ffmpegX a go as well, so thanks to those that recommended it!
 
It might be time to invest in a newer machine. Video conversion is going to be slow on a G4. You're also going to have to dedicate it to just doing that as well.
 
i've only used isquint to convert .flv files into .mov files... i basically use isquint for ripping videos off of youtube

What ever software you use video conversion will always be slow on a G4. So don't expect blazing fast conversions :) it is a very CPU intensive task.

tonight, or longer. Did you get it done yet?. It took my TiBook 21 days straight to convert all my HandBraked DVD-->avi's back to MP4's using iSquint (220 GB). Should have Handbraked into MP4 in the first place. Stupid!
 
Perian

Why do i use Perian for? What does it have to do with avi to mpeg converer?

I've downloaded Perian and mpeg Streamclip. I've tried to convert some AVI videos, before installing Perian and all them were soundless. Does someone know why?

Perian simply allows you to play avi. formats in quicktime, if you wish to convert avi. files use Handbrake it is the best free program for movie file conversion. You can convert many different movie formats and also rip DVD's.
