Any good free chat app for windows AND Mac?

NOT SKYPE and NOT MSN MESSANGER!

Anything else?

The only other one I use that hasn't been listed yet is Steam IM.

And I use Adium to handle a few IMs as an all-in-one.

But the App needs to work on my friends MS WINDOWS PC so we can chat.

Adium etc only runs on MAC, she can't install any Adium on her MS WINDOWS PC.

I would use AOL, since that is compatible with iChat, along with their own Mac and Windows clients.

A.

Google Hangouts is compatible with Messages on ML/Mavericks and can be accessed in a browser on a Windows PC using Gmail (or a plugin in Chrome).

You are looking for Pidgin. Very lean multiprotocol client that runs on anything.

I used to switch to pidgin when ICQ got so annoying with their adds and the horrible GUI and everything else. It has a plugin structure which makes it very universal and work with almost everything. Sometimes like for skype you need to have skype running but you don't actually have to use it. TorChat if you are plotting something sinister. Basically everything.
