Free design software

Hello

I'm looking to design a logo for a new business, I was wondering if there is any free software out there that i can use just to have a little play around in, or even something with a free trial. I'm not sure of the type of software i need to be using.

If you were doing if professionally, you'd need Adobe Illustrator. If this is just a one time thing and you don't have the budget to hire a professional...check out Inkscape. You will need to install X11 (it comes on your install disks if it's not already on your machine).
