Hey all....

i can get a free G4 desktop, with 21" CRT monitor and keyboard . all it needs is a data cable from the mother board to the DVD drive and hard drive. and have 500RAM.

do you think that would make a good second computer for surfing etc...or is it way slow?

my iMac G3 350mhz is good at websurfin. I'd say it would be fine. it won't blow your socks off, but it will be fine.

"G4 Desktop" is not very specific. You'll need to give us the precise model of G4 we're talking about before someone could tell you how much RAM it supports.

As for a processor upgrade, it's possible but expensive.

Yeah, especially since manufacturers like Sonnet no longer make processor upgrades for some of the older PPC models. You can probably find one on eBay or something though. From a cost/benefit standpoint, it's not worth upgrading a G4. If you want to do it for an exercise in geekery and you have the money, go for it.
