Hello everyone! I have a crazy situation going on with this new MacBook Pro I obtained. A friend gave it to me, saying Apple pronounced it dead and unfixable. This is odd because I'm typing from it right now and didn't have to buy any parts. It was fine. Just needed to be wiped/MacOS reinstalled. I suspect the hard drive cable may be failing (as is common with these models) because I don't know what else could have prompted them to think it doesn't work. And, Apple has lied to two other people I know relating to the issue of failed SATA cables in these macs, claiming they can't be fixed when in reality it is extremely simple. However, for now, it works.
The only other problem it had when I got it was a stiff hinge that made a horrible popping sound. I disassembled the machine and took the hinges apart, and ground down the shafts to reduce friction. I succeeded a little too much 😂 the lid became loose and too floppy. So, I ended up using my personal a1278 MacBook and trading one hinge, so each machine now has a loose and normal hinge. They both work ok... later I'll order replacement hinges. I also temporarily damaged the video cable on my personal MacBook, but situating the cable around and doing something that made a loud electric pop (somehow didn't kill me or the board) fixed that. Oh, and the backlight in the keyboard is spotty for some reason (on the 'new' one.)
Anyway, prior to the work with the hinges the 'new' machine charged off the charger I got with it, but afterwards, it stopped. I was afraid I damaged the circuitry on the logic board, but I checked to see if the 85-watt charger I'd been using with my existing MacBook worked, and it did. So I checked the charger that came with this 'new' mac in my existing MacBook, and it worked there. So I'm very confused and in need of guidance... the ports are clearly ok, and the chargers are ok, so why won't this MacBook take charge from the original charger anymore? I even reset NVRAM, no avail. What gives?
Thanks for any advice!
