I just bought my Macbook and I want to know what you guys would recommend for downloading free music? I know Macs cant get viruses, but I really don't want to put it in any danger.

What kind of free music?

There are many sites that offer simple and legal downloading by right-clicking the song. It was that way when mp3.com started in the early 00s.

all you gotta do is time it right and be the 10 billionth download on itunes. then Bam! $10,000 gift card.. all yours, problem solved.. like eating cake

IBRIAA haha
Free and music don't go together nowadays.

You don't have to worry about getting a virus with Mac OS as of right now, the people that have anti virus programs that use P2P sharing usually have them so they don't download infected files and distribute them to people that it can affect. As far as P2P sharing you have Limewire and others that are similar, just search on Google or something. There are also torrents which I feel are safer because if a file is infected there generally won't be tons of people seeding it. With Limewire you won't know for sure until you have it.
If you go the torrent method, I use Transmission. It's simple and works.

Use Spotify if you're in an eligible country, or Pandora in the US... or another one whose name I don't remember and you don't even need to install any software :D

The future is in the cloud... no downloading to your computer :p

last.fm is also good for listening to music, they also offer free stuff on the artist pages a lot.

Although if you're talking about pirating music, which is the same on every platform. But it's against forum rules to discuss it.

I try to buy all of my music, but if you're looking to download free music legally, then you can go to last.fm and go to the downloads. There's a lot of really good free stuff there.

definitely torrent. I use utorrent on my desktop and have not used my mbp for downloading anything, so I cannot tell you how the version of utorrent for mac is. limewire is how too many get viruses.

I used to use uTorrent for windows back in the dark days, but I prefer Transmission on OS X to uTorrent.

Best torrent client on any platform IMO.

transmission or utorrent?

by the way, I am still using a very old version of utorrent. Very fast and efficient. I do not know what happen with the newer versions, but not the same program.

i use Transmission, simple, gets the job done, very low CPU usage.

Can also be controlled via the web.

Uhhhhhh lock??

Discussion of piracy is not allowed.

Well the TS just asked for free music not for free copyrighted music. I know there are plenty of musicians out there that have free music available, you just have to know where to go to get it and that's what the guy was asking for :)

You used to be able to download crap from Russia (download, not torrent), and it was free and no viruses. Though the music industry put tons of pressure on Russia to shut that site down, and they did. In the late 90s, early 2000s I used that. Now if I want free music I use torrents (which isn't often).

Vuze is my torrent of choice. Really simple to use and supports a lot other devices like iPhone, iPod, Apple TV, Playstation 3, Xbox 360, PSP, Tivo. It's really cool and useful.
