Free space shred does not remove all files

Hi All

I have run the MAC 'erase free space' option using the 7-pass option on my main hard drive. When I run AppleXsoft recovery software, it can still find files which I would have expected to be fully removed. Does this mean that the MAC is storing files that are trash but not classed as free space or are they not being erased fully by the 'erase free space' option?

I am running MAC OS 10.6.8.
