Back in July last year I upgrade from the original iPhone to the 3G. I took out a £45 PM, 18 month contract. I rarely spend more than the £45.

Yesterday I rang O2 to see how much it would cost to upgrade and was told I would have to buy out the remaining 7 months of my contract, or - because I'm a gold customer - I could wait until October and then I would get a free upgrade. I decided to wait as I cannot afford to buy out a contract at the moment.

Later that day I remembered the original email I had in July last year from O2 when I was requesting an upgrade - I dug it up and emaild the same question to them - mycarewebform@o2mail.co.uk

A couple of hours later I had a reply saying that because I was out of contract I was eligible for a free upgrade and they were happy to give me one (WTF !?!).

So I followed the link the email to the online upgrade page, request the upgrade (a number was texted to my phone) and low and behold I got through to a screen allowing me to order !!!

Now, trouble is I then paused because I wondered about trying to do the upgrade in an O2 or Apple shop today so that I'd have a lovely 3GS to play with this weekend. In the end I decide to upgrade online because I was concerned that in the shop they would suss that I'm not really out of contract .
By the time I went back to O2's upgrade page the site was down :(
