We have an external "RIP" computer for one of our copiers. It has software on it that allows me to configure print jobs that will print from the copier that it is connected to.

In order to mess with that software from another computer, we have Microsoft Remote Desktop Connection Client installed on my Mac so I can log into that computer from here and set up the settings for the print jobs.

THE PROBLEM IS THIS

When I log in using that software, it locks the PC with the RIP software. So, if I want to mess with the software directly from the PC, I have to leave my office and go out and type in the user/pass on the PC to go in which in turn logs me out of the Remote Desktop Connection software. Then if I want to mess with the software from the Mac again, I have to log back in on the Mac. Just a pain in the ass.

Question is this: Is there any free software out there that would allow me to leave the PC logged in and then on the Mac, install something that basically works the same as Remote Desktop Connection but when I log in on the Mac, it wont log out the PC side?

I remember some software from years ago that we played with at my last job... VNC or something? Any ideas on software for this?

But posters identified free alternatives, no?

Sorry, but If you want VNC for OSX for free, but VNC's developer does not offer it for OSX for free, there is nothing I can do about that.

How about running VNC Server Free Edition on Windows and use OSX's built in Screen Sharing app to connect?

Chicken Of The VNC

Wow... that program works great and is a LOT faster than that MS software.... but it still locks the PC when I log in from the Mac.

The reason you are being locked on the 'copier pc' is because you're probably using the same credentials that you are already logged into locally on that PC. I'd suggest a flavour of VNC installed on the Windows box (UltraVNC, RealVNC) installed as a service and then use Chicken of the VNC on the Mac to access it. It's what I use and it works fine. :)
