Right now the only way I can get Mac OS format on this drive is if I have a DOS partition. This is really annoying and I did a search but none of the results had answers.

In Disk Utility, you have to click on the hard drive, and not the DOS partition that is indented and below the hard drive name. Once you do that, the Partition tab becomes available. Click on it and choose one volume (or more), then click on the Options tab and select GUID partition map. Then choose HFS+ with journaling and initialize the drive.

Now when I restore my old time machine drive to my new, this happens. It think I might just start over in time machine. EDIT: right after I posted it started to work again.

Ahhh!!! Thanks so much for posting this. I thought I just bought a brick. It works flawless and transferring 1.23 TB's of data as I type. Thx again.
