My wife bought Freehand MX and got the MXa upgrade. It was installed on her computer, and then on our cube when her hard drive started having problems. Today she wiped her drive and reinstalled everything. When she installed Freehand she got a popup saying she couldn't activate it because it was already on 2 computers. One of them is the computer she's installing it on now so a call to Macromedia ought to straighten everything out, right? Wrong! Their answer was that you get 2 activations and that's it. You can deactivate an installation and then use it on another computer (like with songs from iTunes Music Store) but that doesn't do you a lot of good when your hard drive suddenly dies.
I know she can deactivate the cube and use it on her computer. Maybe she can use a backup of her old Freehand preferences. She can get Freehand working, that's not the issue--actually she'll probably stick to Adobe Illustrator now since Macromedia has pissed her off (even downloading the MXa upgrade was a pain). Does it seem reasonable for them not to be more accomodating? Apple will deauthroize all your computers from itunes if you ask them nice--what would it hurt Macromedia to do the same?
It's especially silly because the rest of Studio MX doesn't even have activation. You can install it on 6 million computers and it'll work. Only the upgrade to Freehand requires activation.
I thought I had more of a point when I started writing but I guess I'm mostly venting.
