Freezes and hangs

My friend recently gave me his computer he couldn't get to work for 6 months (13in Macbook Pro). I turned it on and the Apple logo appeared and span, then it would just shut down.

I reformatted the drive and did a fresh install of OSX Leopard, now its booted to the OS, however it freezes and beach balls the second a Application is launched. Any ideas?

Did you check the hard drive, perhaps its failing.

Re-seat RAM, check CPU Temp and HD SMART status.
