Hi everyone, hoping someone could help with this. I picked up a black MacBook 2007 cheap and tried installing a fresh copy of snow leopard. The thing kept freezing so I changed the hdd and ram. Now it's still freezing and the fans are super loud beforehand. I've tried resetting the smc and still nothing. Anyone have any other ideas?

Have you checked to see if the fans are clogged with dust? That could explain the fan noise. Not the freezing though. It's weird that it does it with a fresh install of the OS.

Just popped it open and cleaned them out a bit, they for sure are running. Now after putting it back together it has stopped blowing loudly but after using iTunes for 10 minutes the whole thing froze again.

Have you done a repaste on the CPU? An overheating CPU can cause the symptoms you're describing.

I just did my black Macbook a couple of days ago. I wasn't having trouble with it freezing, but replacing the 7+ year old paste with fresh made an immediate and noticeable difference in the operating temperatures as well as how much/how often the fan ran.

Be sure to also blow out the "fins" on the heatsink thoroughly while you have it apart.

Not sure I have the skill set for that. I tried running it with fancontol and it worked for quite a while, but then froze as usual. I made an appt with Apple and will bring it in on Wednesday, maybe they can find out what the issue is.

If you've had it apart far enough to clean the fan out, you really are just about 4 screws away from being able to do a repaste.

Next to the fan, you should see the heatsink. It's secured with 4 screws on metal brackets. You will need to remove these screws, and once they are out the whole heatsink assembly should lift up and out of the computer.

You will likely see a LOT of old thermal compound(it's grayish white) both on top of the CPU and GPU as well as on the copper pads on the bottom of the heatsink. If it's the original compound, it will likely be sort of hard and "flakey." Use some denatured alcohol or high purity isopropyl alcohol on a clean cloth to clean both the tops of the processor and GPU, as well as the underside of the heatsink. Be sure both areas are SPOTLESS and completely dry.

You then need to apply some fresh compound. There are probably 50 different compounds on the market as well as debates about how best to apply them. I use Artic Silver 5, primarily because it's readily available at Radio Shack and other retail stores(as opposed to online). Put a drop each on the CPU and GPU, and then use clean credit card or the like to spread it in a thin, even layer over the surface of both. Be sure you get a consistent layer, although as a general rule less is more. Once you've applied compound, set the heatsink squarely down on CPU and GPU, and tighten the screws. That's all there is to it.

I keep trying to use it and now it's back to the super loud fans at boot and then freezes. I'll let you know what happens

Going tomorrow to apple but was curious if this console file helps diagnose it

I'm afraid I can't help you on the error results.

With that said, before you take it to the Apple store, you might want to read the following page

http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT1752

Your computer is considered "Vintage"(it's specifically listed on the above page). I've been at the Genius bar when someone brought in a "vintage" computer(some sort of white Macbook as I recall) and the Genius wouldn't even look at it.

By all means try, but if the Apple stores in your area are as much of a nightmare to get in and out of as the ones here, it may not be worth the aggravation.

If you have a local independent Apple retailer in your area, you might have better luck getting it worked on.

Changed the thermal paste and still freezes at boot. I'm thinking that something is wrong with the motherboard.

May have spoken too soon. At first I couldn't even turn it on, black screen and no boot chime. Finally after about 40 min it booted. No freezes or high fans and temps for cpu are about 40-60. Have another issue. Cannot download apps from the App Store. When clicked they turn grey (button to download) and nothing happens. Tried erase and reinstall Snow Leopard and same issue. Any ideas?

i have the same issue as you with my black macbook 1,1. Ive tried deleting the plists, repairing permissions and no luck.

Any takers? We both can't download from the Mac App Store. Download button simply goes grey and nothing happens.
