freezing hanging file copy errors

I have been scanning some documents to an external hard drive, I have been running xtra finder and pathfinder. recently all would be ok, until when I would click on a file on my external hard drive to check that it scanned, I would get a beachball, and finder would freeze, I would have to shut down my hard drive and reboot my mac, this would temporarily solve the problem, then it would start to happen again.

I am doing this with a mid 2011 mac mini osx 10.8.5, with an icydock raid external enclosure, with xtra finder and pathfinder apps, and using an epson scanner.

I also get file copy errors, cannot complete error -47 file in use.
