Hi there, I'd like to tap into your vast knowledge.

For a couple of weeks I have been having the following issue: my system starts to freeze for 5-7 seconds at completely random times but with growing frequency. The beach ball appears and the system is completely unresponsive. All of this is accompanied by a strange pulsating sound from the harddrive.

It started a couple of weeks ago while watching a movie, then disappeared for some time. Now it happens every 15-20mins, completely unrelated to what I'm doing.

I have repaired permissions, checked the hdd with disk utility etc. I have tried looking at the Activity Monitor during one of those "spasms", but to no avail.

Fortunately everything is backed up, but I'm sort of waiting for disaster to strike and wipe out my harddrive.

I'm still under extended warranty, but can't afford to give my laptop away for a week to be checked for the next couple of weeks as I need work to be done and don't have a spare machine.

What do you think is happening? Is my hdd on the verge of death? Or something else that hopefully can be fixed by myself.

Thanks in advance for any advise that may come.

Tim
