My MBP 10.6.3 keeps freezing. I've checked the disc and permissions. I've run virus scans. It's frozen during VLC so I reinstalled that. It's frozen during Firefox so I could reinstall that but it's also frozen while only using Finder! Should I reinstall the OS or is the hard drive wearing out? I've had it since June 2009.

I would certainly make sure you have a current backup, in case the drive is failing. It's very unlikely to have anything to do with malware, as there are no OS X viruses and only a few OS X Trojans in the wild, which are rare to encounter and none of which produce the symptoms you describe. You could check to see if you have some runaway app or process that is consuming system resources, as well as checking to make sure you have sufficient RAM for your needs.

Follow every step of the following instructions precisely. Do not skip any steps.
  1. Launch Activity Monitor
  2. Change "My Processes" at the top to "All Processes"
  3. Click on the "% CPU" column heading once or twice, so the arrow points downward (highest values on top). (If that column isn't visible, right-click on the column headings and check it, NOT "CPU Time")
  4. Click on the System Memory tab at the bottom.
  5. Take a screen shot of the entire Activity Monitor window, then scroll down to see the rest of the list, take another screen shot
  6. Post your screenshots.
