I have a macbook pro 2009 running Mavericks.
It freezes completely with no discernable pattern to the freezing. There is no beachball, just a frozen cursor. Reboot ALWAYS fixes it.
I recently replaced the hard drive because this was happening, but the problem persists.
Pram has been reset etc.
Any ideas???

Thanks
Neil Curtis.

Could be a bunch of problems, run the Apple Hardware test to see if any hardware issues are reported, also look at the console logs around the time of the freezing

Could try reinstalling OSX. No need to erase drive, OSX will reinstall over existing OSX. Always have a backup just in case!

2009 MBP's have had issues with bad or failing SATA cables also.

Thanks for this.
I recently installed a new hard drive and OSX Snow Leopard from the original installation disks, then upgraded to Mavericks so I guess I've already done a reinstall?

Did your Mac do this prior to replacing the hard drive?

As mentioned previously, when it does occur does anything come up in the console?

Yes it did freeze before. I'm sorry, I don't know what the console is and how to access it?

Have you tried booting into safe mode and seeing if you can make it freeze?

I have had it in safe mode but didn't wait for the freeze. Will do. Thanks.

Does it freeze when you are running a certain app? In my case i had a 2014 macbook air which constantly froze when using firefox. After switching to safari never had a problem again.

No, it doesn't seem to. Anytime really.
