My new MBA just shipped, but will obviously have Lion preinstalled. This is my first Mac, so I'm wondering if I should do a fresh install of mountain lion when it arrives or if I can just upgrade the OS normally because the laptop is brand new.

Can anyone offer some advice? Thanks!

Forget thinking about fresh installation or upgrading. What's the difference if you don't have anything to delete?

If your machine is running fine now, just do an upgrade. No reason to go through all the hassle of a fresh install unless things are jacked up.

My advice is to back up the new MacBook Air (so you can easily go back to Lion if Mountain Lion is too buggy at first), migrate your old Mac over, and then install the upgrade. Alternatively, you can install the upgrade, then migrate, but you'll need to enter in your Apple ID, etc. to activate the Mac App Store where you will redeem your upgrade code.
