hello,

i want to do a fresh install of ventura on my macbook air , do i need to back up my icloud drive?
i have 50gb+ of 3d model files that i store in icloud that i want to make sure i dont lose them.

Whether you need to or not, I am not sure, but you need to. If these files are important to you don’t just have one copy. External hard drives are super cheap.

I will back up all my data in iCloud Drive first.
OBS. Be aware that iCloud is not a backup service. It is a mechanism to synchronize data between Apple devices. So you may end up deleting your iCloud "backup" if you are not totally sure about how these things work. - You really should get an external drive and do a full Time Machine backup first. The very first backup may take "forever" but subsequent hourly backups are quick because they actually only records changes since the last backup.

There will come several new versions of Ventura. So why not wait until the next "big" update with a ton og bug-fixes is ready.

Good advice, to which I would add that the TM (or any other) backup of your iCloud Data will only be useful if you dont have "Optimise storage" checked. If 'Optimise" is checked you have given Apple permission to replace local copies of iCloud data with signpost markers, so the backup won't have full size actual copies.
