My computer came with snow leopard and I downloaded Lion from the app store over it.

I would like to format my computer and do a fresh install of Lion over it.How can I do this? Can I put the Lion on an external harddisk and boot it from there orr?

A quick Google/Forum search would've brought you to this thread which explains it in detail.

+1 to this

help tip i dont see in this thread is in order to re-download Lion your must hold option key and launch the App Store, keep the option key pressed and click purchases on the top of the screen, now OS X Lion should have the install button next to it so you can re-download the installer file
