my friend had a long boarding accident and did some pretty bad damage to his ipod touch pic below.

Is there anyway he can have the bazel replaced? The screen and camera on the front still work it is only the glass that has been shattered.

local shops should be able to fix it. even the watch care place a block from my house does iPhone repairs and the owner said he's going to also be doing touch repairs soon.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPod; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/532.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0.5 Mobile/8B117 Safari/6531.22.7)

Hmm I ride my long board with mine, even recorded video while riding. Maybe get better at longboarding. Haha jk but look on iFixit and eBay for replacements. But he careful, the LCD may have cracked because the screen is glued directly to he glass.

It is fixable, but probably expensive. Anyways, there will be dust particles under new glass for sure, as it is almost impossible to avoid it getting on screen during replacement process.

Not if the tech uses a Zerostat and compressed air in a relatively clean room.

i dont think you can get it replace, because unlike past ipod touches isnt the 4th gen glass like fuzed to the screen?

Yeah, I'm pretty sure the glass and the lcd are one component now. You can't just replace the glass, gotta replace the whole screen.

Ohhhhhh.... That might explain why I can't find anything. I'll look again.

Still can't find anything, but I might have missed something.

Here's a teardown by iFixit. It's going to be a difficult and expensive repair.

iPod Touch 4th Generation Teardown

Step 24

iPod Touch 4th Generation Repairability: 4 out of 10 (10 is easiest to repair)

Good: Opening the device is pretty straightforward, as long as you have a heat gun and some iPod Touch opening tools handy.

Good: The headphone jack is not soldered to the logic board, a first for the iPod Touch line.

Bad: The front glass and LCD are permanently fused together, increasing the cost of repairing broken front glass.

Bad: Removing the display completely requires removing the logic board

Bad: Apple soldered the volume button and sleep button cable to the logic board. The previous Touch had a ZIF connector. This makes removing logic board very difficult.

Bad: The battery is still soldered to the logic board, just like previous models.

do you think he could sell it for parts if so how much could he get out of it?

Is it worth repairing it or should he just buy a new one?

Depends. How much did he spend to begin with? 8GB-$230? 32GB-$300? 64GB-$400?

Also, since this is such a rough activity, wouldn't a cheaper and less fragile device be a better option?

it really was just one of those freak accidents. He has had an ipod touch for 2 years and never broke it.

it was a 32GB

Only real way to know is to get a quote. I don't think replacing the glass and bezel is going to cost the 299 plus tax he paid. Might as well fix it and use it.

Oh crap.

I'm sorry, but this is gonna cost him some BIG BUCKS.

The glass is laminated to the LCD screen, and...

Yeah. I don't think I need to finish the rest.

He can't just get the glass fixed, he's gonna need to get the WHOLE screen fixed. You might want to try iFixit, or check with apple and see if you can get them to believe that it's something they can fix under warranty.

I dropped mine Yesterday and it looks exactly like this!!, I was furious!!
But I do found the digitizer/glass itself on ebay. See item 390187839445.
I doubt that it is glued together forever. If so, how they can sell the glass alone? A heat gun will probably be your best friend.
I will try and will let you know once I get my screen from China.
This little thing is really fragile!!
