My friend has an iPhone 4, but does not have OSX on her MacBook Pro.

Is there any way she can get her iPhone set up that you guys now about?

Umm...yeah?

You don't have to have a Mac to use a iPhone 4.

I'm still using my old Windows XP computer for my iPhone.

Crazy.

What version though?

I think the assumption was that if she doesn't have OSX on her MBP, then she's got Windows. You need Windows or OSX for the iPhone.

Yep - that's correct. She has a MBP, I'm getting her to find out what version of the OS she has on it.

Weren't all MacBook Pros shipped with some version of OS X on them. OP, I think you are saying that she doesn't have 10.5 or 10.6. If she has an early macbook pro (2006-2007), she probably has OS X 10.4, which cannot be used with the iPhone 4.

It's sheer madness that Apple support a competitors OS from 2004 than they do their own!

Is there absolutely no way for her to upgrade her OS?

As far as I can tell, the first "MacBook Pro" was shipped in Jan 2006, with OSX version 10.4.4 aka "Tiger." (Based on Wikipedia. YMMV.)

iTunes 10, which was just released today, requires OSX 10.5 or newer.
However, iTunes 9.2.1, which you can download here http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1056 is supported by OSX 10.4.11, which is a free update, and can be downloaded here http://support.apple.com/kb/DL171

(This assumes that your friend in truth owns a MacBook Pro, which was only ever offered with Intel CPUs, rather than a PowerBook G4 or some such laptop. The fact that she says she has a MacBook Pro but not OSX suggests she's confused about something, so the above might not actually apply to her. Her best bet might be to make a Genius Bar appointment and take the machine in to an Apple Store.)
