A friend of mine just got an iPhone 4 (first iPhone) and asked me what apps I'd recommend he start off with. I don't want to overwhelm him with too many right away so how would you guys answer this question. Which apps would be best and most useful to help someone appreciate the iPhone and it's capabilities?

Why not have him search based on his (or her) needs. Is he a game player, looking for some business apps, or enhance his experience.

Given the incredibly high volume of apps, its impossible to recommend what they should get without knowing what the user wants to do with it.

Good point. It's my brother's friend and he's in college but he simply asked for apps I couldn't live without now that I've gotten used to them.

Appshopper is a good site that shows you their featured apps as well as temporarily discounted ones, etc.

The iTunes store also has a Staff Picks section, and they usually have decent stuff there too.

+1 for maflynn's suggestion as well.

Find my iPhone. It's amazing to me how many iPhone 4 owners don't know that this app exists, and, more importantly, that it is free.
