I have tried searching for answers but got terribly confused. So for that reason I'd like to post my specific question and maybe someone can help me:

I am currently using dropbox, mostly for automated mobile backups of my Macbook Air. But I'd like to move away from it for security (privacy) concerns as well as for more space.

I have a Fritz Box 7490 router with USB inputs and a WD Elements 500GB external mobile hard drive that I am not using.

Can I connect the hard drive to the router and use it like I use dropbox now? Is it as reliable/fast? Can such a drive run 24/7 connected to the router? Is there something I am not thinking of?

A Fritzbox 7490 isnt professional grade equipment, its just a Modem/Router/AccessPoint/VOIP/DECT put together into a single piece of equipment, which makes it a good piece of equipment for a normal consumer but a prosumer (which i would specify you as) wont be satisfied by it.

That being said it could probably work, because you can use USB Drives as Network Storage and i also think you can create a VPN with the fritzbox 7490.

But the Problem is the CPU/Network Chip is underpowered in the Fritzbox 7390 and 7490. In Theory it could work but in reality your VOIP/Telephone conversation will get choppy everytime you use your "personal Dropbox".

This youtube video should show you the problem:
