My 2013 MBP has served me really well and it actually still does a solid job for general computing. It's the base model with a 2.4GHz i5 processor and 8GB DDR3 memory.

I also do a lot of day trading, which is where it starts showing its age. I do this on a website/trade engine that consumes lots of memory and CPU power (I am no techy, so I don't know what software makes it drain so much power, but this the website for anybody interested https://www.binance.com/en/trade/pro/BTC_USDT )

Ideally, I had wanted to wait for the 14" release, but I don't think I can hold out for another year or so. Since I'd like to get 512GB of storage, I am leaning towards the high end spec model. Alternatively, I could opt for the mid range model but I would still want to upgrade the memory from 8GB to 16GB, making the price: $1720 vs $1940 for the high end model - $220 difference for a better CPU, faster memory, better speakers, and double fans.

Although I also had 8GB in my old MBP, which isn't sufficient for the current workload (particularly due to the trading engine), I bet that the increased CPU power and RAM speed developments would probably make 8GB sufficient for my needs. However, since I like to keep my machine for 4-5 years, I prefer to be better safe than sorry.

Any thoughts?

Also, since I live in the Middle East, products only come with 1 year standard warranty as opposed to 2 years in the EU. What are the thoughts on Applecare, should I get it?

Do you really think that a web app requires so much resources? You should have a look to the statistics of your laptop (just done on mine) while you use it and not trust the feeling, 16GB/512GB are totally useless for that.

I use that website and www.tradingview.com in parallel. Combined memory use is around 1,5-2GB. Processor demand varies, but doesn't seem to be the main driver of making my Macbook be sluggish. It's the aforementioned websites' impact on memory that seem to be the root cause. Now obviously, I have other tabs and apps open at the same time, causing memory usage to be maxed out.

My wish to have 512GB disk space is irrelevant to the above.
