My setup as it is now is a MacBook doubling as a desktop (in clamshell mode with external monitor) and an iPad for a tablet solution. I'm wondering though if I'd be better served having an iMac for the desktop and replacing my iPad with a 12 inch MB instead (or one similar in size). I sometimes do work on the road involving accessing Google sheets, MS Office and other things that often would be easier on a MacBook, so it's been my custom to bring my iPad and my MacBook with me on the road in case there's work I need to do that can't really be done on an iPad.

I'd miss the tablet form as I sometimes use that to read a book, but other than that I don't think I'd miss it too much. What's been your experience?

tbh, I had the 2010 model of cMBP and a 2012 Air. So my MB is faster ;-) but some easy renderings or 3D design in Catia and AutoCad works quite good. better than expected.

I bought a used 2016 MB in mind that I will just use it for a year till the new MBP settles down in price. But than the keyboard fiasco started. Now after 2 years the prices are still high and no new MB or Air. I'm still quite happy and enjoy the lightness and portability. I even sold my iPad after a few months cos I wasn't using it any more. so no reason to upgrade yet. but touch ID and a second USB port would help from time to time.

sure all the new MPBs will perform much better on heavy tasks. but you have to decide on what tool you really need depending on your work.

Right, I'll need to see if my workflow really does seem to be where an iMac/12"MB would be a better solution.

Thanks for sharing your insights!

Keep posting your thoughts.

I work remotely in marketing, but I generally do most of my work at home, as it's most comfortable there and I have a great home office set up. Since I'm salaried though I consider myself "on call" no matter where I am, and often the iPad just hasn't done the trick for me (e.g. if I needed to go into a spreadsheet where Google Sheets is just about the worst iOS app), so I need to carry my MacBook as well when Im further away from home. I do like the hand holding form factor of the iPad, and it's the only way I read books now. Makes me wonder if I should throw in a Kindle to fill that void if I give up the iPad overall.

Given your uses, it seems the 12 inch Macbook would be the far superior mobile solution for you than an iPad. I personally enjoy reading on the Kindle, but it's not the same experience as reading on a tablet.
