I feel like a schmuck.

Bought Air... liked it, but poor battery was my experience. SO... bought the 17Pro Max... HUGE!!! Heavy!! so....returned to Air... now, back to the office from 2 weeks off. One aspect of my work is (occasionally, 2-3X week) scan drivers license, where the app does OCR (no different than addling a drivers license to Apple Wallet). massive fail. Cannot get it to focus properly. Thought it was the app, so I tried to just add mine to Apple Wallet. Nope. The Air camera can'f focus close up (DUH!! Should have read the specs)

Anyhow, picking it up later today.

Ordered Midnight Blue, local store is showing all three colors Pro in stock. May do a pivot and go silver.

Now to the ball ache of transferring everything yet again. No matter what scheme I use, it's still a ball ache. 🫤

Edit to add: Yes, I realize "screen size" and I felt the Air was perfect. I want "Pro" but PM is a bit too heavy. I'll miss the screen size, but I'll lean more into my iPad Pro.

I feel you.

That lack of Macro on the Air is a real problem it appears. I had the same issue. I had the Air and Pro Max. Returned the Air because the camera was not good enough and the lack of Macro was the killer for me. Battery life was fine, screen size ideal, lack of weight and size perfect, but that camera. We have become too dependent on phone cameras.

Completely agree.. fortunately I have 1 day left on my 14 day return window.

Hate doing it, it's a PITA but I can't regret long term. Even the cameras of the standard 17 would be fine

As an AAPL shareholder, please stop with the returns and be more decisive with your choices. I still haven't upgraded from my 13 PM as I've been doing research since they've come out. If a return is made, it'll be due to a defect, not something I don't like it.

Great sentiment but not always practical. I especially have issues with people returning as new phones that have been damaged repaired and then returned. In this case I had no idea that the lack of the macro would be such a pain.

Apple stock is at a record high and profits are through the roof. Sure you don’t have to worry about returns. 😂

this focus problem is complete ********. ever since they went with 48mp sensor, they've required a focus distance that's longer than arm lengh. I truly prefer my 13 pro camera. don't have to use macro for taking shots of papers

I returned an Air, Max and Pro before returning to the Air. Could care less if I inconvenience Apple or if it hurts their bottom line. I think Apple and Tim Cook will be just fine.

As of today, Apple‘s market cap is $3.6 trillion…So they are teetering on the edge of bankruptcy. Please stop the returns!!!
Poor Apple.

As a share holder and former employee i encourage people to take advantage of apple's return policy.
I would rather have a happy customer that will be more apt to upgrade in the future, entrap them into the apple ecosystem and introduce a few devices into the replacement inventory than lose a customer.

I view the return as a consumer privilege, it keeps me happy with my Apple products, if I kept the iPhone Air, I may have dissatisfaction 12 months from now or sooner and switche something different like Samsung

Keep in mind the air did not have a number like the iPhone 17 models do it just call the iPhone Air

How are you focusing close on the Pro? Just keeping the auto-macro active?

I was Air first, 17 Pro second, back to Air.

Sticking with Air because the screen and ergonomics are perfect.... and keeping my 16 Pro lol

I had a change of mind about a iPad yesterday, rang up to cancel it was already preparing to ship, girl said I could just try it for 2 weeks if I don't like it return it.

Maybe those complaining about returns should take it up with Apple lol

Sorry to hear that you had issues with the camera. I turned in a couple of receipts earlier today for work expense and I was able to get pretty close to scan the receipts into PDF in Files app. Hope 17 Pro works better for you.

This is a misleading thread.

The Air camera can focus much closer than the main camera of the Pro.

To compensate for the main’s poor close-focusing distance, the Pro relies on its ultrawide camera.

But the ultrawide camera has a wide field of view (duh). So when used as an auto-macro, the image is cropped. But the sensor was already tiny to begin with, so this hack does bad things to image quality.

Long story short, the Air produces better results for document copy than the Pro, for most document sizes. Obviously don’t go so close it can’t focus. That’s user error.

If you tell me the exact size of this driving licence I might do a demo later.

Adding a drivers license to the app requires close up. The Air will eventually get it.. the Pro did it in 2 seconds

What size is this driving licence?

Does the app – a pretty dumb one by the sound of things – let you upload an image from your photo library? If so you could crop an image taken at the Air’s minimum focus distance, which, as I explained, is usually better quality than the Pro’s best effort.
