I plan on using a 6s Plus coming from Android.

1. I have all of my contacts saved to my gmail, and I know iOS deals with iCloud accounts. If I setup my gmail, will my contacts be uploaded automatically? Will I be able to save new contacts to gmail or is it iCloud by default?

2. I want to keep my whatsapp chats, groups and media. They are backed up daily to a gmail account. Will I be able to retrieve everything on the iPhone? I heard/read that whatsapp backups are not interchangeable or something.

Thanks.

#1 I can answer.

iCloud is optional. Everything about Apple's services are optional. I use mainly Google services on my iPhone. Just add the account in the Contacts section in the Settings app and your contacts will populate. Make sure while you are doing this that you set Google to be the default account for your contacts. Otherwise, it defaults to iCloud (if you have set up an iCloud account) and any new contacts you add won't push to Google.

Sorry, can't help with #2 as I don't use WhatsApp.

Don’t think you can carry across WhatsApp messages to a different platform.
