I have some DVDs, normal movies. I want to rip them to my computer so I can watch them there, and I also want to convert them to play on my iPod nano(4th gen).

What programs should I use and how should I do it?

Okay now I only need them in iPod format, not computer at all.

Should I do MP4 or H264? Does it matter if I do only one pass since it's going to be on a tiny screen anyway? I'm somewhat limited with time.

I think you would just do a MP4 and if you're limited on time, a single pass would do.

But for the future, a multi-pass ensures quality and size.

Okay thanks.

I'm having to use OSex to rip it because handbrake couldn't detect the movie file itself, only some trailer-length clips.

So I guess once it's done ripping I'll use handbrake to convert it to ipod format.
