yes I heard that the new C1 cellular modem wasn't great in certain tests

C1 seems to be "fine" by all respects. It's missing a lot of the edge-case capabilities that the Qualcomm modems support, but it's not nearly the disaster that the Intel modems were (I know; I had an iPhone 11 with Intel modem and it was pretty bad). Better to evaluate whether you need mmWave support since it's missing entirely from the C1. Basically, people who need it tend to know they need it. If you don't know if you need it, you most likely don't.

All that being said, it's still 1.0 silicon. I don't think anyone would fault you for waiting until a C2 or C3. Apple is doing a great job with their custom silicon efforts, but they're not immune to mistakes or unforeseen problems. However, there are enough 16e's out there at this point that if there was some huge failing in the modem, we would have heard about it by now. By all respects, Apple got it right.

also the thoughts off tariffs effecting prices would make it almost impossible for me to buy when the 17 comes out as for now the 16 is exempt unless he changes his mind which could happen any time between now and September

This was partially what motivated me to buy now—My plan was to buy a 16 Pro at some point this summer. The tariff instability encouraged me to move that up. No one can guess how much or even if tariffs will affect the prices of Apple gear. But my personal feeling is Apple products are already priced at the top edge of their value. Any increase in price, regardless of the reason, will push them toward being above what I'm willing to pay. I'd rather make some major purchases now and be able to safely sit on the sidelines for years to come while all the geopolitical mud-throwing goes on.

I would normally say to wait but with potential price increases it's risky. Also I don't think the standard 17 will have 12GB RAM, only the Pro.

Since you're doing gaming the 120hz display will probably be nice to have, but any of them would be an upgrade coming from XR.

iPhone XR to 15 Pro user here.

It depends on your preference regarding iOS 18.

I know you’re worried about tariffs, but if you are, I suggest upgrading now.

I bought my iPhone 15 Pro for $790 during my winter break in January before inauguration day . I searched early and set up price alerts on iPhone listing sites.

I did this to prepare for tariffs and consider the future of Apple products’ compatibility with iOS and iPadOS 19. The iPhone XR, pre-Pro iPhone 2018 series like iPhone XS and iPhone 11 will likely be no longer be compatible with these operating systems this WWDC and summer.

Slow app opening, crashes, lack of 120Hz refresh rate promotion, no Apple Intelligence, Fitness+ connectivity issues, and difficulty finding cases were my lower priorities for upgrading. I also went double the storage space for the 15 Pro to accommodate ProRes, Apple Intelligence, and other essential files and Fitness+ stacks.

Best advice for upgrading: look for the 15 or 16 Pros. They will last for years.

If monthly payments aren’t your thing, check databases like our Marketplace on MR (if available), eBay, Swappa, and other sites. Set up price alerts or email newsletters through filtered searches for BNIB and new listings.

I track experienced sellers and check for free shipping. One seller offered free delivery and even express delivery, which came a day early to help me prepare my tech items for my business trip. 2 days after I placed the order they dispatched it already to deliver it!

No Magsafe, No Dynamic island, only one camera, Apples own chipset (seems pretty alright tho), no U1/U2 (ultrawideband) chipset, no 5G mmWave support, a more "budget" A18 CPU (one less GPU core).

Sounds like a lot of missing features but tbh, most won't miss them or notice a difference.
It is "a lot of missing features." All those things are the reason for upgrading

I'm almost like you, I'm moving from a tired iPhone XS to an iPhone 16 pro or Max, or waiting for the 17.
I am leaning toward the 16 pro now as the 17 in September rumoured to get most of that the 16 pro has now .
Only rumours say that it will have 12gb ram the 17 which makes me think i should wait as do gaming on my phone and that would be a nice upgrade

You can wait for 3-4 months, but there is no guarantee that your XR will work fine till then. In case you experience issues with XR, I recommend switching to the iPhone 16 Pro.

Last week it was announced that the tariffs have been exempted from technology products. You should’ve read it by now.
Otherwise has been stated since then: https://www.macrumors.com/2025/04/14/trump-semiconductor-tariffs-apple/

I have the 16 Pro and while more RAM would be nice to have the games and software are all designed to run well on devices with less than 8GB. You probably won't notice much difference to be honest.

Unlike the 17 Pro, I doubt the regular iPhone 17 will have 12GB RAM.
I agree, the pro models always get the RAM increases a year or two before the regular model does and rumours suggest it won't be anything different with the 17 series.

hello I thinking of upgrading my iPhone XR for my birthday in may, however I am stuck deciding which one to go for .
iPhone 16 because of the better colour options or 16 pro for titanium and a extra camera or wait it out to September .
I am going to be paying monthly for 2 years so this why I am struggling to decide as I will be locked in for 2 years and want something to last for at least that amount of time .
especially with the rumours of the standard 17 getting 120 hz do I wait it out or go for the pro 16? or the standard 16 for the colours ?
I came from the iPhone XR to the iPhone 16 Pro. It really depends what you require. For me, as someone into photography I wanted the additional camera options. If these are not important then the iPhone 16 or even 16e is a highly capable phone, and a huge upgrade from the XR

The latest rumours:

iPhone 17 Pro will also have a bunch of smaller improvements, as per usual. These probably won't be a make-or-break reason to upgrade for most people, but here's everything else rumored for iPhone 17 Pro:
New Wi-Fi chipset developed in-house
Increase to 12GB of RAM
New 24MP front facing camera
New 48MP telephoto camera
Dual video recording capability in Camera app

The camera is already at 48 Mp on the 16 pro and Max.
Apart from filming with the 2 cameras at the same time
The 12 GB of ram is enough for a normal person, the 8 GB is enough.

right I have made a decision I am going to upgrade to the 16 pro 256gb on may 10th,
16 was tempting for the colour options but I think after reading what has been said on here the 16 pro would provide the long term solution I need .
thank you all for helping me decide
Thanks for the update, glad you read all of y’all’s thoughts on the iPhone upgrade tips.

The colour of the 16 pro what would you prefer? I highly suggest desert titanium.

Will you trade in your iPhone XR or get the iPhone 16 Pro and keep the old XR?

I am thinking either white titanium , or black .
desert titanium I think I would have to see in store as haven't seen that one yet .
yes trading in iPhone XR should get $100 credit towards so that makes the 256gb same price as 128gb .

Good decision. I did the same thing 😆 , went for the black titanium 16 pro 256gb. I will be using a case so its only the camera part that will show. And think black will look the best when in a dark leather or black case.

So, now I'm stuck with another decision, what case should I get :-D

I agree with Reverend Benny. I traded in my 11 for the 16 Pro and would definitely recommend it. Yes the colors aren’t as vibrant as the regular 16 but it still looks sleek and more professional (especially with a nice case). I was critical of the desert titanium but when I saw it but I was impressed and would have gotten it if I wanted something more eye catching (I didn’t). The camera is wonderful, camera control is actually useful for me, and I’ve never had it slow down on gaming except when my connection was bad once or twice. I also got 256 gigabytes for all the photos I take and decent amount of games.

You’re going to trade it in at Apple Store right? You can also see the colours in store to see how it looks in person.
