On my mid-2012 rMBP, Facetime was not a terrific experience. Lots of blurring and frame stuttering, single duplex audio. All in all, not very satisfying. I got the new 10.5 IPP, and THAT had an outstanding camera. Maybe the doubled refresh rate contributed to this, but the video quality in Facetime was pure HD. No blurring, no stuttering, just a very smooth, crystal clear video.
I just tried Facetime on my new 2017 MBP, and I have to say, Facetime stinks. I FT'd with the same person, who used the same computer as always. The video experience is the same as with my 2012 - lots of blurring, lots of frame stuttering. Just an awful experience, really.
It's a shame that Apple can't put an HD camera into a system like the new MBP. If the higher refresh rate makes a difference, then do that for the MBP, too. Having such a low quality experience with FT is silly for such a high powered system as this one.
