Do you have any tips to solve this issue? I thought perhaps it wasn't focusing well due to low light, but even in bright light it won't focus. Is this typical or do you think it's defective? None of my previous iPhone models had this problem. Here's a photo of my hair as an example. I clicked on the top of my head so it should be perfectly focused. I don't have any issues holding my hands steady and the screen is clean where the camera is. It also looks like there's some software smoothing effect that further exacerbates it.

My 11 pro max front camera is absolutely terrible quality on FaceTime and duo in great light. Unusable in lower light. I don’t recall this ever being an issue on previous models.

The selfie or front camera on the iPhone (any iPhone) is a fixed focus camera, focused to infinity. It does not have auto focus. If the camera uses really high ISO, it will look bad. That camera works best with a lot of light. If you have another iPhone (spouse or friend etc) then test it next to another one. Try you iPad if you have one. Just compare. If the camera is bad , Apple will most likely replace the iPhone if it’s still under warranty... but you’ll probably have to wait until the COVID-19 is over

There's no focusing mechanism in any iPhone's front camera. The closer you are, the blurrier it will be. Front cameras are what they are - it'll be somewhat crisp during the day when held a normal arm's length away from yourself, but don't expect it to be like the rear camera at all.

That's a good idea, but I've taken a lot of selfies with other iPhones using the front camera and they always came out in-focus. I guess when the Apple stores re-open I'll take it down there and have them look at it.
