With: external drive plugged into front right USB-C port
Saw app crashes that accessed that data

With: Same drive plugged into left side USB-C ports
No crashes

Called Apple Support

After SMC Reset process of:
  • Shutdown
  • Hold 3 keys for 7 seconds: Shift + Option + Control
  • Then press power button also. Hold those 4 keys for another 7 seconds.
  • 10 seconds of ? (didn't write it down... just wrote "10 seconds")
I'm no longer seeing app crashes with the front right USB-C port.

Does that make sense? Or is this just a coincidence...
What does the SMC control with the front right USB-C port?

Yes, lots of usb-c port problems appear To be solved by SMC reset. For my 2016 MBP I frequently lose the ability to mount drives in random usb-c ports, and SMC reset solves it.
