Adds the ability to view shared content over your network. That's probably the biggest difference.

how does this new feature work? is it just smb shares that it uses or what

It taps into iTunes/iPhoto sharing. Instead of opening up iTunes and seeing a list of shared libraries ..you can open up front row and access the same libraries.

Nothing to do with smb://
