front row plays mkv files slowly

hi

when using front row to play .mkv files, the video stutters and is very slow. it looks like it is playing at 10 frames per second. the audio is fine though

i like using front row because it has a big font, which lets me browse through my library from a distance with a remote keyboard. i have vlc and mplayer extended which play the mkv file fine, and quicktime with perian which can play the video but not that well.

any suggestions on improving front row performance?
