I've searched this issue and the only solution was SMC reset, which I've tried. It's a last 2011, so no warranty left. I'm hoping its not the main board.

When I plug in my iPhone, if I move the cable ever so slightly, it disconnects. Tried 3 different cables. Even my Nike Sportwatch as the same issue on that port.

Took it into Apple Store and they said $310 to be shipped out for repair or $500 to do in store. I really don't need the second USB port. I only went from my 2010 MBP to this 2011MBP to satisfy my upgrade bug for a year or so. I guess I'll just live with it for now.

I agree "live with it" looks the best sync the iPhone via WiFi or get a small hub to expand the surviving port...

Interesting development: after they 'looked' at it, the port won't work at all. My sport watch will charge from the port, but not sync. Strange...
