I have been successfully watching movies on my mac through a HDMI cord to my tv all afternoon, and as soon as I have disconnected from the cord the screen has zoomed in and is frozen. I have tried to turn it off and re-start, but it opens to the same screen each time. I cannot access any system preferences. PLEASE HELP.

Have you tried running it through a defrost cycle?

Jokes aside, OSX (and Windows) won't automatically realize where the output or input should be. It's a manual change. So if you're mirror your image or video source to another device, then you need to follow the inverse of your original steps.

Reboot holding down the command-option-p-r key combination until you hear the startup chime a third time, then release the keys.
