fsck freeze- hardrive dead?

Does anyone have any experience of using fsck and having it freeze up?

I'm trying to repair a disk on my 2009 MacBook pro but disk utility freezes at the "gathering disk information" stage. So I tried running fsck but I can only do this with the installation disk still in the MacBook, so the checks come back as "the volume mac os installation DVD appears to be okay" and after that I can't enter anything. So I can't run again or reboot.

Any ideas would be really helpful! Thanks
