Full back up of iphone (including cydia applications)

Hey guys I'm on 3.0.1 right now and I've messed around with Cydia enough where my iphone bricks when I try to uninstall/update applications like SMS Reporter. I'm getting sick of this and I'm thinking if I should upgrade to 3.1.2 to save me the trouble. However, I do have 2 questions I'd like to ask:

1) Battery life wise is 3.0.1 better or 3.1.2?
2) If I wanted to back up all my applications (including the ones I got through cydia) how can I do so? I don't want to spend hours trying to get all my programs back.
