I was messing around with making a disk image of my main system drive from disk util in recovery menu to possibly be used to restore from later (I have other backup options but just wanted to try).

My ssd internal is about 50 gigs used up of 64gb capacity (old macbook air), I selected read/write and compressed, apfs, pointed to my main drive folder, and the image came out to be about 8 gigs, isn't this really compressed, or is this normal?

Save yourself some trouble.

Use either CarbonCopyCloner or SuperDuper to create a bootable cloned drive instead.

MUCH easier, and fewer problems.
