So why hasn't Apple given us Full Screen Apps with their Safari & mail.app?

Seems the small screen would warrant the full screen treatment before my 27" iMac would.

I think it would be nice to maximize the space on my iPhone when surfing the web or checking emails.

Is Safari and Mail on the iPhone not full screen?

I think the OP is asking for Apple to get rid of status and navigation bars.

I agree that Safari greatly needs this feature. Even with the rumoured screen increase for the iPhone 5, a full screen Safari would be nice. Maybe it can be an option under Settings to give people the choice to configure it as full screen or not. There's still time 'till the IOS 5 release....

Allowing people to use their applications on full screen on their devices would be a major improvement from Safari and Apple. Browsing internet and stuff like this will be much more easier and comfortable with browser running on full screen. Perhaps the new Iphone 5 will allow full screen applications.

It would be nice if the status bar on both Safari as well as mail could disappear. Not sure how fluid they could make it so those items come back with a certain gesture. Since we interact with the screen 100% of the time. I think a single tap of the home button could take you out of full screen mode. I know I'd like the extra viewing space.

Now that iOS5 has the pull down notification bar to show the menu bar info, it would be interesting to remove the bar in apps. The extra space in landscape mode would be useful.

Never mind. Ignore this. The info in my post was incorrect.
