I used to use VLC to do this and it was no problem. now that I have tiger, everyone says VLC dosent work. I havent even tried to DL it. But if it doesnot work... is their another alternative I can use

VLC still works, somewhat. Almost, sort of. But Command-shift-3 should take a screen shot in any app.
 
Had this problem, in 10.2 you could use grab and apple dvd player to get screen shots. Now you have to use VLC (it works, download the beta) or fire up the terminal and use the command line app screencapture to get a screen capture from apple's dvd player.
 
There is a widget called Capture that allows you take screenshots of DVD Player, but I haven't tried it in full screen mode.
