I'm super, super excited I finally got this simple project completed. When I sold my old iMac I really missed the functionality of the aluminum remote. It was simple, quick and reliable. Fact is, I was quite ticked off to lose the IR since I use my Mac as my entertainment center and listen to a lot of music.
The iTunes Remote app on my iPad is fine & dandy, but it's slow and takes a ton of clicking through just to turn the sound down on a song. It doesn't even control the volume on YouTube or watching a movie on amazon or netflix.
My solution was to purchase a little USB dongle called FLIRC. It has an accompanying Mac OS app to program the remote keys to your Mac. In my case I needed to go into the menu Controllers > Media Keys and choose what keys on the remote would do what. It took all of 3 minutes and they are $23 from their site, on amazon or on eBay.
For an Apple Remote I just went with one of the old white Apple remotes (OEM). They are ~$5 new on eBay and work as well as the $19 aluminum ones.
Everything is working perfectly and I am happy with my desktop once again (finally). I'm in no way affiliated with FLIRC or Apple, just wanted to share a slick working solution.
