Fun with My Power Cord

I have to take out and wrap back up my power cord that came w/ my macbook about 1.5 years ago several times a day.

What kind of damage am I doing to it? Is there a better and more elegant solution? Battery alone is not even close to enough or long enough and I do not want to have to purchase/carry around/charge more than 1 battery.
