Dropped a cup to that corner of my 17" mbp (early2009, mbp5,2), where hdd is and my old momentusXT broke.
Since I've owned external bd-burner for years, I thought that now would be good time to install second storage in place of internal ODD.
What would be optimal price-performance combination for drives?
I'm guessing that biggest slow hdd and some pretty fast, but small sdd?

I am using a 60 Gb OWC SSD and the standard 500gb 5400-rpm hard drive in my 13 inch MacBook Pro and it is working excellent. I advise you to calculate the size of the files that you will use on a daily basis and get an ssd of that size.

Also, I would suggest, despite the speed reduction, a 5400 rpm hard drive. In my opinion, when it is not the only drive, the 72 is not worth the extra heat, vibration and noise.

Used in an SSD/HDD MBP my 7200rpm Hitachi spends most of its time spun down, even spun up there is no discernible heat, vibration or noise....it is however noticeably faster (and quieter) when in use than my previous Seagate 5400rpm drive.
