I love iOS dearly. Also eyeing a career change into programming. Not sure if it's a wise time to invest in iOS programming.

Where would it be in 5-10 years from now? What's the direction we're going? Will we ever go beyond apps?

Any thoughts on this?

Apple is paying out billions to established companies doing iOS apps, and many of the more successful ones are hiring.

Beyond apps, Google and IBM are already hosting conferences on Swift in the "cloud" (e.g. for servers). There's also some slow activity for Swift on Raspberry Pi's for embedded. So iOS app programming skills may end up transferable to other product areas.
