Fuzzy Fonts and sore eyes

I have a new Samsung 997DF 19" monitor and the fonts are blurry in the finder and in all apps. I have it set at 1280x1024 at 75 Hertz. When I set it to 60 Hertz the fonts are MUCH sharper but there is a noticeable screen flicker. I've tried just about every resolution/ Hertz combo, font smoothing combo that I can and nothing seems suitable for my aching eyes. What gives?

You're going to want it at 72 Hz or higher to eliminate the flicker from overhead lights on this CRT monitor. You might also try 80 or 85 Hz.

Go into your General System Preferences and experiment with changing the Font Smoothing values - you may find that your machine is set to overly-smooth the fonts.

Also on the Samsung in its own menus there is a Moire control that you may have to work with to sharpen it up.

Have you Degaussed the screen? Thats the menu control that looks like a horseshoe magnet.

Finally - you may have to send the monitor back. I had to go through 3 of the 957DF's before I found a usable one.

No it's a CRT --- VGA all the way, bay-bee!

Got it!

It was the monitor setting with the two circular arrows that was turned off (I don't have the manual). But the viewable area shrank at least an inch and when I "stretch to fit hor/vert, or change the resolution, it looks the same again.
