So just got off the phone with apple support (recently got a new iMac so figure i might as well take advantage of the 90 days)

For years I used the quick time entry on my iCal... i.e. I would double click the day and the event box would pop up.. I would title it something like "Movie from 5-8pm" and hit enter and the calendar would put "Movie" from 5-8 pm on that day.

At sometime, probably when El Cap came out (?), this stopped working.. it would just put it at a default time and call it "Movie 5-8pm"

This quick text and time entry ONLY works with the quick event at the top of the calendar now... which, for me, is way worse... I'd much rather double click the day and add the title and time than click the quick event and write "movie march 13th 5-8pm"

Thats just me.... I like looking at the actual day while doing it.

I'm just doing this post so that if anyone, like me, was frustrated with this it is not a glitch.. it is a feature that has been removed at some time... i could find no threads on this after a LOT of searching so hopefully this saves someone else some time/frustration
